Embark on a Family Adventure: Unveiling the Wonders of Bend, Oregon with Kids!

Our November trip to Bend inspired us to share a comprehensive three-day itinerary, designed to assist you in planning a magical trip suitable for adventurers of all ages.

Traveling with our kids from Denver, Colorado, we flew from Denver International Airport (DIA) to Redmond (RDM) Airport, a mere 15.6 miles from Bend, Oregon. Renting a car at the airport, we embarked on a scenic drive to our hotel, nestled in a beautiful forest less than thirty minutes away—a truly magical start to our journey.

Where to stay?
Our stay at LOGE in Bend, Oregon was nothing short of fantastic, especially for our family with kids. This Pet-Friendly Hotel in Bend is nestled into a grove of lodgepole pines, providing a serene and natural setting. LOGE Bend is not only the closest in-town property to Mt. Bachelor, offering convenience for outdoor enthusiasts, but it’s also just a 15-minute bike ride to breweries and downtown. The cozy ambiance and affordability of LOGE Bend make it a highly recommended choice for anyone looking to combine comfort, proximity to nature, and accessibility to Bend’s vibrant attractions.

Now, let’s talk about places to visit and things to do. As a family with a toddler and a teenager, we had to choose activities and trails that would be interesting for both boys. Here are our top picks. Hopefully, it will make your planning easier.

Day 1: Nature’s Embrace

Breakfast at McKay Cottage Restaurant: Kickstart your day with a delicious breakfast at McKay Cottage. Although there was a bit of a wait, it was completely worth it. The food was fresh and flavorful. They have been voted the best breakfast in Bend, Oregon every year since 2010. Keep in mind that they don’t take reservations; it’s a first-come, first-served restaurant, so arriving early is advisable. Our favorites were the Stuffed French Toast, featuring two buttery croissants stuffed with mascarpone and served with marionberry compote, and the Guac n’ Roll, which includes toasted nine-grain bread, avocado, radish, organic microgreens, cherry tomato, chili-lime sea salt, two eggs, and fresh fruit. It’s definitely a must-have.

Hike Dillon Falls and Benham Falls: this is perfect for families with kids, as it is not very challenging; I would describe it more as a stroll than a hike. Additionally, its proximity to the Deschutes River provides a picturesque backdrop, offering families a perfect place to take photos and solidify these memories. The trails around Dillon Falls and Benham Falls are not only family-friendly but also boast plenty of open spaces for kids to run and play freely. The gorgeous waterfalls along the route add an element of wonder and excitement. This hike offers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty, making it an ideal choice for families seeking a wholesome outdoor activity with the added bonus of stunning waterfall views.

Explore local stores at Box Factory: Discover the local charm at Box Factory, for a unique shopping experience.

Lunch at The Podski Food Cart Lot: for lunch we stopped at The Podski Food Cart Lot, as I heard they are offering a variety of delectable options to satisfy every palate. Our choice was the Pierogi, which turned out to be a hit with my boys.

Wander through Lava Tubes: For our afternoon adventure, we embarked on a mesmerizing journey through Lava Tubes with Wanderlust Tours. This proved to be an adventure that captivated us all, both young and older. It’s something that my boys are still talking about. We can’t wait to go back and explore more lava tubes around Bend, as there are plenty. If you are looking for a memorable and fun experience, definitely check out Wanderlust Tours and their amazing tours.

Sunset at Pilot Butte: Conclude your day with a stunning sunset view from Pilot Butte, providing a picturesque backdrop to your Bend adventure.

Dinner: we highly recommend checking out El Sancho. With two locations in Bend, Oregon, their tacos are among the most delicious we’ve had to date. Definitely a must-try!

Day 2: Downtown Discovery

Yummy breakfast at Sparrow Bakery: Begin your day with a delicious breakfast at Sparrow Bakery, setting the stage for a day of exploration. An interesting fact is that Sparrow Bakery’s menus vary, and they often have seasonal/daily specials. Don’t hesitate to ask the staff for their recommendations or explore the daily offerings for a delightful surprise.

Explore Downtown Bend, OR: Wander through the vibrant streets of Downtown Bend, discovering unique shops, art, and the lively atmosphere that defines the heart of the city.

Visit High Desert Museum: A visit to the High Desert Museum is a MUST. It promises a rich tapestry of experiences, seamlessly weaving together history, wildlife, and education. The daily animal encounters offer a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the diverse inhabitants of the high desert, providing an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Moreover, the museum’s commitment to wildlife conservation is exemplified through the stories of rescued birds, highlighting their resilience and the importance of environmental stewardship. A standout feature is the Autzen Otter Exhibit, where playful otters frolic and swim in a carefully crafted habitat, offering a delightful and informative glimpse into the lives of these charismatic creatures. The High Desert Museum stands as a testament to the region’s natural wonders, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of adventure, learning, and appreciation for the high desert’s unique ecosystem.

Lunch at The Depot in Terrebonne: Enjoy a delightful lunch at The Depot in Terrebonne, combining local flavors with a charming ambiance.

Visit Crescent Moon Ranch and feed the alpacas: Create lasting memories with a visit to the Crescent Moon Ranch, where the whole family can feed and interact with adorable alpacas.

Sunset at Smith Rock State Park: Witness a breathtaking sunset at Smith Rock State Park, a natural spectacle that will leave you in awe.

This place has it all! Here are a few must-do hikes in the area:

Dinner at Spork: Conclude your day with a delectable dinner at Spork, offering a diverse menu to satisfy every palate.

Day 3: Tranquil Retreats and Culinary Delights

Breakfast at Sisters Coffee Company: Start your day with a delightful breakfast at Sisters Coffee Company fueling up for a day of relaxation and exploration.

Soak in the Old St. Francis School Soaking Pool (Reservations required): Enjoy a tranquil soak in the Old St. Francis School Soaking Pool (reservations required), providing a rejuvenating experience for the whole family.

Hike around Shevlin Park: Shevlin Park is home to miles of trails winding through its old-growth forest and high desert sage-covered lands. This expansive natural setting offers a diverse and immersive outdoor experience, inviting everyone to explore the rich biodiversity of the park. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stroll or an adventurous hike, Shevlin Park provides a scenic escape, allowing you to connect with the pristine beauty of its surroundings.

Enjoy the best Thai food at Wild Rose: For lunch stop at one of the best Thai restaurants, the Wild Rose restaurant.

Visit Steelhead Falls: Embark on a captivating adventure along the trail to Steelhead Falls, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Bend, Oregon. The trail provides an excellent hiking opportunity with breathtaking views, leading to the mesmerizing waterfall.

Taste delicious Humm Kombucha at their tasting room: If you love a good kombucha, then a visit to the Humm Kombucha tasting room is a must. Indulge in sampling delicious and refreshing beverages.

End the day with the best pizza in town at Pacific Pizza Brew: Wrap up your Bend adventure on a flavorful note by enjoying the best pizza in town at Pacific Pizza Brew. We ordered the Habanero Alfredo pizza and also the Bacon and Fig pizza, both of which were delicious. You need to try them too!

Extended Adventures: Sahalie and Koosah Falls

For those craving more adventure, a visit to Sahalie and Koosah Falls promises nature’s spectacle at its finest—an extension to your unforgettable Bend experience!
